Well MMO fans, I have officially made the move to Austin, you can still take classes in Fresno, but as for me Mrs. Kirby is now a Doula-ing in Austin Texas, yee ha! I will be teaching Childbirth Education (with an emphasis on meditation, visualization, yoga and comfort measures[including rebozo use]), Birth Partner Classes, and Attachment Parenting influenced Infant care including baby wearing. In the Central Valley to date, having a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) has proven to be difficult. Very few doctors were willing to take patients wanting a VBAC. Moms, you are consumers you “vote” with your money, if more moms seek out what they want and are vocal about it, there will be a change in the way obstetrics is practiced, however, as long a we stand by and say nothing and allow decisions to be made in the name of saving time or convenience then there will be no change. Our children are depending on us to protect them, know your rights and learn more about what is normal about childbirth. Some experiences are not all happy ones, some women feel as if they were violated, the term I’ve heard is medical rape, as disturbing as these stories are they can help expectant moms know what to avoid, here is a link to such a case.

Docs told to avoid 1 flu shot brand

A government panel is recommending doctors steer clear of giving one brand of flu vaccine to young children this year because of convulsions and fever in kids who got the shot in Australia and New Zealand.

At issues is the flu vaccine made by CSL Biotherapies, an Australian company. CSL is one of five manufacturers supplying the U.S. this fall but it only accounts for a small portion of the 170 million doses.

Large Weight Gain in Pregnancy Makes for Bigger Babies

The degree of maternal weight gain during pregnancy was directly associated with babies’ birth weight, researchers said.

Birth records of nearly 1.2 million newborns indicated that those born to mothers who gained more than 24 kg (53 lbs) weighed a mean of 148.9 g (5.2 oz) more than offspring of women who gained just 8 to 10 kg (18 to 22 lb), according to study findings published online in The Lancet.

Fresno! Midwives Needed!

An additional 334,000 midwives are needed, according to the UN World Health Organization (WHO). The UNFPA-ICM programme will increase the number of births attended by professional midwifery providers and develop the foundations for a sustainable midwifery workforce in selected developing countries.

Its focus will be on training midwives, developing practice standards, and strengthening national midwifery associations. It is estimated that skilled attendance at delivery, backed up by emergency obstetric care, could reduce the number of women dying in pregnancy and childbirth by about 75 per cent.

Every year half a million women die in pregnancy or childbirth and 10 to 15 million women suffer serious or long-lasting illnesses or injuries. In addition, 3 million newborns die during the first week of life and another 3 million are stillborn. Many of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented if all births were attended by midwives.

The $9-million initiative will start in 11 of the hardest-hit countries with the highest levels of maternal deaths and disability and the lowest rates of births attended by skilled workers – Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, Sudan, Uganda and Zambia. It will then expand to include 30 countries and, if funding permits, even more.

The three-year project is funded by the Netherlands and Sweden and will be implemented by ICM and UNFPA offices in the selected countries.

“We need some strong advocates who can call on governments to invest in much needed midwives,” ICM President Bridget Lynch said. “But we also need to work with governments to ensure the scaling up and quality of midwifery services. They need to take ownership.”
